How to Find People Online

April 29th, 2009

Internet search engines are very good tools for searching for someone. And you have to pay nothing. Search engines, however, are not designed to specifically find people. As a result, some people can get discouraged from simply typing in the person’s name and then when they do not see the exact match on the first page, they assume that the person cannot be found using this great and free resource.

When you type in a name in the search field, this is what takes place. The search engines sees numbers, not letters and in a few seconds they must interpret what you typed in, not to mention trying to find the best possible match. When you are looking for something common, for example, “apple pies”, the results are probably pretty relevant. When it comes to looking for a person, however, the search engines need your help, unless the person you seek is very famous.

Here are the things you need to do to help the search engines out and hopefully find the person you seek. First, not all search engines and are the same, which is why each one should be treated as a separate search. One search engine might not do the job, but the next one or the one after that could possibly give you a solid lead.

Second, with only a name and millions and millions of websites on the Internet, the match can be very difficult for a search engine. The bottom line is that you need to be as specific as possible without being too extreme to help the search engines find your request. For example, “apple pies” is pretty general, and “apple pies made by grandmothers in Louisville, Kentucky” would be extremely specific. Somewhere in between is where you want the search engine to look for your person. For example, beyond just the name, you could add in any other information to help narrow the search, such as the city, the sate, or even an organization the person belonged to in the past.

Anything that can be added to a name will enhance the search. For example, the person’s job field or career, hobby, or anything that might narrow down the search. Let’s say that the person like to race cars, you might try adding “car race” and the full name of the person. It might surprise you how better it is with this method. Also try to see if the person has a personal website on the Internet. Add “blog” or “website” and the person’s full name. You will want to write out what types of searches and be like a detective.

If you hit a wall, try locating the individual’s associates, friends and family. There is a very good chance that one of these people might be on the Internet. One of these people, once found, can lead you directly to the person you seek. Persistence is everything, in addition to knowing how to search from the free resources at your command.
