How to send text’s (SMS) from a Computer FREE? And also call’s from a computer free?

I’m trying to send a text internationally through yahoo sms. I am in the US but my friend lives in the UK. I am having trouble dialing the number as an error message always comes up. I thought that this service allowed free international? Thanks for the advice.

when i tried typing sms in tamil ,i was not able to type.and so, i downloaded a virtual keyboard and finally typed it and had ac copy to my clipboard.but when im trying it to send to a mobile which supports tamil fonts the sms is not being sent.so can u pls suggest or find me a website so that i can send sms in tamil .
